Hanoi [Vietnam], September 30: Despite not being a Lunar New Year film and not being released during a holiday period, 'Human Trafficking Camp' has achieved an unprecedented surge at the Vietnamese box office.
The film "Human Trafficking Camp" grossed approximately 20 billion VND on its opening day, 50 billion VND after two days, 78 billion VND after three days, and reached 100 billion VND in just about 3.5 days. According to data from Box Office Vietnam as of the morning of September 29th, the film's revenue has exceeded 120 billion VND and continues to hold the number one position at the box office.
Human trafficking camps : A 'phenomenon' at the Vietnamese box office.
The exponentially increasing numbers show that the appeal of " The Human Trafficking Camp" doesn't simply stem from initial curiosity. Over the three-day weekend of September 25-27, the film grossed approximately 78.65 billion VND, accounting for over 70% of the total market revenue. On Sunday, September 27 alone, the film sold over 328,000 tickets, earning over 30 billion VND. Notably, this achievement was accomplished during a normal market period, without the advantage of the Lunar New Year film season or long holidays.
It's clear that the first thing that helped " The Human Trafficking Camp" resonate with the public was its subject matter. The traps of "easy work, high pay," cross-border scams, and human trafficking are nothing new on screen, as seen before in films like "Blood Paradise" and "Money Trap." But this film by director Toni Duong Bao Anh transformed a topical issue into a highly entertaining survival story, rather than simply offering a warning message.
The story begins when Ny ( Steven Nguyen ) searches for his younger sister, Ut Det (Huynh Minh Kien), after she falls into a scam. Ny and his companion are then captured and taken to the criminal lair, forced to find a way to survive and escape along with other victims. From a journey to rescue a loved one, the film expands into a resistance by a community driven to the brink.
This is also what makes "The Human Trafficking Camp" stand out, even though the subject matter isn't new. Instead of dedicating most of its runtime to describing the criminal network's tactics, the film shifts the story to an action-survival structure, constantly placing the characters in chases, fights, and escapes. The fast pace and constant conflict make the film feel more like a mainstream entertainment movie than a film purely exploring social issues.
Another factor lies in the scale of the production. According to the crew, the project took approximately five years to complete, including three years for script development and two years for filming and post-production. Some large-scale scenes involved more than 700 actors. The total number of actors and crew members involved in the production process reached over 10,000. The film also heavily invested in action sequences in large spaces rather than relying solely on small-scale confrontations.
This investment created something that Vietnamese films don't always have: a sense of scale that stimulated the curiosity of both the audience and the media. The crowded camp, the controlled crowds, the chases and confrontations made the danger not just exist in dialogue but were concretized through visuals. Direct blows, injured characters, being cornered and fighting for survival created a strong sense of impact. For an action film, this is the value that audiences can most clearly feel when they buy a ticket to go to the cinema.
With the film "Human Trafficking Camp ," the outstanding cast cannot be overlooked. Steven Nguyen is a significant link in this impact. After his success in " Red Rain ," the actor already had a certain level of recognition when he joined " Human Trafficking Camp ." But Ny is not just portrayed as a "muscle hero." The character is beaten, injured, and often finds himself in vulnerable positions; his initial motivation is simply to find and save his sister. This adds a layer of family emotion to the action sequences, rather than becoming a mere series of fight scenes.
The cast, including Quach Ngọc Ngoan , Huỳnh Minh Kien, People's Artist Như Quỳnh, Meritorious Artist Tuyết Thu, Tùng Mint, and others, also creates many diverse characters. In particular, placing different people in the same harsh circumstances helps the film explore fear, survival instincts, family bonds, and solidarity - emotions that are relatively easy to empathize with for the general public.
But one of the most important factors that transformed initial appeal into a box office explosion lay outside the screen: word-of-mouth. The film quickly became a trending topic on social media, attracting new viewers. Google Trends recorded many prominent search terms that week directly related to the film. As viewership increased, screenings were expanded; increased screenings, in turn, helped the film reach even more audiences. A favorable cycle of word-of-mouth - demand - screenings - revenue quickly formed.
Of course, The Human Trafficking Camp isn't without its weaknesses. Some storylines are drawn out and overly complex; some plot points are resolved relatively smoothly; and some flashbacks slow down the film's pace. But at the box office, a film doesn't necessarily have to be perfect to become a phenomenon. What matters is whether the film finds a connection between the story the audience cares about and the experience they want to have in theaters.
The human trafficking camp is doing quite well: a hot topic "packed" with action, survival, and emotion; large enough in scale to feel "worth seeing in theaters"; a charismatic male lead; and strong word-of-mouth to draw audiences in after the initial screenings.
Therefore, surpassing 100 billion VND in just 3.5 days is not simply a revenue milestone, but also shows that when Vietnamese films find the right market tappoint, audiences can react very quickly and create unpredictable surges.
