Koblenz [Germany], April 28: A 48-year-old Syrian man went on trial in Germany on Monday accused of being responsible for torture and the deaths of 70 prisoners in Damascus.
The defendant, who faces 70 charges of murder as well as crimes against humanity, was silent on the first day of the trial at the Higher Regional Court in Koblenz. Prosecutors allege that the man worked as a guard in a prison run by the Syrian intelligence service in Damascus in 2011 and 2012. In that role, he is accused of taking part in numerous interrogations in which prisoners were abused and tortured. (DPA)
